A look at the graffiti art at the historic Shogakukan building

The old Shogakukan building has been a huge part of Japan’s manga history and has been a landmark for anime and manga fans worldwide for 46 years, and now, this old landmark is about to go down.

We have previously reported that that historic building would unfortunately get demolished and get replaced by a new Shogakukan HQ, and to commemorate the old memories, some mangakas (or manga artists) have lined the 1st floor lobby with some manga graffiti art.

Recognize some of them? Well. starting today, August 24, the old Shogakukan building’s graffiti art will temporarily be open for public viewing. This once in a life-time event however only lasts until tomorrow, August 25, but it does promise to take you back to some really old mangas like Doraemon, Ranma 1/2 and Honō no Tenkōsei.

The event, called Graffiti Tournament! Thank you Shogakukan building! started when 25 manga artists led by Doraemon’s Fujiko Fujio A drew some manga art in the hallowed walls of the old building. The artists involved include Naoki Urasawa (20th Century Boys), Kazuhiko Shimamoto (Honō no Tenkōsei), Masami Yuki (Birdy the Mighty/ Patlabor), Mine Yoshizaki (Sgt. Frog), Kuromaru (Shin Kurosagi) and many many more.

The viewing time will be from 9:00 am-9:00 pm with ticket distributions starting at 8:15. Photography is allowed but taking videos as well as food and drinks are not.
