But there is one question about the popular game on the minds of several people – what do the World War II veterans who served as the crew for these ships think of KanColle?

Japanese weekly newspaper Shukan Post has recently published an feature article about Japanese warships. As part of their warship feature, they presented a World War II veteran who once served as a crew member of the Japanese Imperial Battleship Yahagi during World War II is presented with an image of Yahagi’s Kantai Collection counterpart.

The veteran is 90-year-old Takekuni Ikeda who served aboard the Yahagi during World War II. His reaction to Kantai Collection’s Yahagi can be described as a positive one as he says that Yahagi is cute and looks like a good girl.

In response to this, Kantai Collection creator Kensuke Tanaka himself released a statement (translated into English) saying

This person who served aboard the ship and has established a deep emotional connection with it has given the Kantai Collection Yahagi a favorable reception. When we were making the game, our thoughts have always been with those who fought bravely during the war and we do not want history to forget, especially the ships that have been sunk.

The Agano-class Light Cruiser Yahagi fought in several battles during World War II and managed to survive Japan’s crushing defeat during the Battle of the Philippine Sea. The ship was finally sunk in a suicide mission known as Operation Ten-Go where she was ordered to attack the American fleet off of Okinawa. The survivors of the ship were later rescued.

Kantai Collection has reached over 1.5 million registered players and is considered “The next Touhou”. An anime adaptation is slated for release later in 2014.
