Gintama is without a doubt, one of the most controversial anime titles in Japan. Just last month when its latest anime premiered, the series shocked Japan by mocking a crying politician. This time, the anime is in another controversy as the non-profit and non-governmental media watchdog, The Broadcasting Ethics and Program Improvement Organization, reports.
According to their report for April 2015, they have received complaints about an anime being shown at the 6:00 pm time slot which depicts “pseudo-sexual intercourse” and “explicit material such as S and M play”.
Anybody would know that the 6:00 pm time slot is also when many kids are also watching TV, and several scenes depicted in Gintama’s episode 270, titled “You Can Hide Your Porn Mags But You Can’t Hide Your ******“. The episode depicts Shinpachi in a rather complicated situation and clearly shows several materials not suited for children, which according to some, is therefore not suited for the 6:00 pm time slot.
Despite all the controversies, Gintama is often perceived in Japan as a youth-oriented show, which means kids are very likely to watch it. This however isn’t the first time an incident like this has happened in Japan with people complaining about a youth-oriented anime depicting sex. When Gundam SEED was first aired, it also drew some controversy as one scene suggested that Kira Yamato (who is a minor) had sex with Flay Allster, who is younger than Kira. That scene, which only suggests that the two of them had sexual intercourse and does not show them doing the act itself, is still being debated on in Japan.
Currently, the group has only flagged Gintama for that very episode.
