SGCafe New Year Special: 7 of the most underrated anime of 2015

2015 has introduced plenty of unforgettable and interesting anime, some of which have now become household names, from One Punch Man to Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma, from Kantai Collection all the way to The Heroic Legend of Arslan and Fate/ Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works (TV). However, there were a few anime which got under the radar of many fans, and have been considered to be underrated. We are taking a look at seven of them.

Now, unlike our picks for the Top 10 Best Anime from last year, we are NOT ranking them, and without further ado, we shall start with:

Maria the Virgin Witch

This anime may have the highest number of following in this list, however, we feel that this excellent anime has been too overshadowed by its Winter 2015 batchmates, such as Kantai Collection, Assassination Classroom, Durarara!! X2 Shou, Death Parade, Saekano, and even Rolling Girls. The anime tells a great story of a witch living in an era of war between England and France. It not only shows us the horrors of war and the politics surrounding it, but also a great tale of the human spirit. This fantasy anime is one you should not miss.

Gourmet Girl Graffiti

When we talk about food porn in anime, what’s the first series to come into mind? Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma of course! However, did you know that before Soma was introduced to many anime viewers back in April, Winter 2015 introduced us to a little gem of a cooking anime called Gourmet Girl Graffiti. The anime is about a girl who finds the joy in cooking for others, and is actually a cute anime as she tries and experiments with new ways to cook. The anime was severely overshadowed by Food Wars, but if you want a cooking anime that is not really that intense and a bit on the mellow side, with much food porn of course, this one is for you.

Show By Rock!!

This musical anime by Sanrio featrured plenty of great music, not only from its main musical group, Plasmagica, but also from some bishounen boy bands, and even a traditional Japanese music band, all of whom sport an animal motif, so if you like cat ears or bunny ears, this one’s for you too. The anime has a pretty interesting story, which follows Cyan, a normal girl who mysteriously gets transported to MIDICITY and becomes a cat girl. There, she finds her destiny in order to save the music industry from an evil record company.

Etotama

Another animal-themed anime from Spring 2015, this anime, based on the Chinese zodiac, is a fun watch, with plenty of twists, turns, and cute, superdeformed battles. Be sure to pack plenty of sesame oil!

Classroom Crisis

We’ll be honest here, if we were ranking this list, we would place Classroom Crisis as the most underrated anime of 2015. The anime shows plenty of great visuals and excellent animation, and has a good story to boot. Sure, many may have dropped the anime, but to those who stuck with it until the end, they got a treat with plenty of unexpected plot twists, complete with a Batman (or Hachiman)-like sacrifice. The anime started out slowly, but as it went on, it became one of the best of its season, however, since it was not as popular as the others, we declare Classroom Crisis as one of 2015’s most severely underrated anime.

Actually, I Am

This cute little romantic comedy about a “leaky basket,” a wacky-yet-lovable-vampire, a comically serious alien of steel. and a whole hodgepodge of fantastical characters, is genuinely funny and lovable, however, it went under the radar of many anime fans, and was not able to get the love it actually deserved. Underrated indeed!

Comet Lucifer

OK, to be fair, ALL of the anime of Fall 2015 were overshadowed by one particular anime called One Punch Man, however, if there was one anime which did not get the love it really deserved, it was Comet Lucifer. The anime featured great animation and lovable characters, and if you are a fan of mecha designs, this one is for you.
